Pooled total all-cause mortality is normal range for this time of the season.
In
recent weeks all-cause mortality has been around 2 z-scores above the baseline in a number of countries. Such excess mortality around Christmas and New Year has been detected in previous years, without an obvious cause been known. There is yet no indication of a clear effect of the recent cold snap on all-cause mortality in Europe.
The pooled analyses, based on eight countries, were adjusted for differences in local delay of reporting and heterogeneities in pattern and variation between the included countries.
